Due to its proximity to Midtown, Chelsea is the perfect spot to visit rooftop bars. There are several buildings from which you can marvel at the precious Empire State Building. You don’t have a choice but to include rooftop bars on your ‘things to do in Chelsea NYC’ -bucket list.

It is also possible to pop in the lobby for a minute or two in order to absorb some of the hotel’s legendary energy – before being kicked out by the security guard. Other famous Poe haunts include Mount Tom on 83rd Street and Claremont, where Poe would look out over the Hudson, and the Edgar Allen Poe cottage in the Bronx. For a more in-depth look at Poe’s journeys in New York City, check out this article. The Junior Balcony Suite is our most requested room as it is one of two room categories that provides access to the iron balconies that overlook West 23rd Street and a view of the famous neon “Hotel Chelsea” sign. The Junior Balcony Suite also features a deep soaking tub, spacious room with living area, and many feature original stained glass windows and decorative fireplaces.

1950s poet Frank O’Hara developed the New York School movement, and many of his poems directly reference the culture and character of the city. O’Hara spent time working at the Museum of Modern Art, where he wrote his “Lunch Poems” on his lunch break and befriended Jackson Pollack and Joni Mitchell, among others. Read on to discover various places these poets spent their time and mined for inspiration, and to find quotes and poems that mention places in New York where you can go in order to feel like you yourself are part of a network of rich literary history. It is also one of the largest neighborhoods, so put on your comfy sneakers and start exploring!

Perhaps you will be inspired to leave the city for good in order to experience true solitude, like Thoreau; perhaps you will fall even more in love with its chaos and energy, like Whitman. The neighborhood, which is bound by Sixth Avenue to the east and the Hudson River to the west and about 20 blocks from about West 14th to 34th streets, has only recently become a renowned cultural hub. It started as a Native American trading post, then it became an industrial hub with the Hudson River Railroad, and with the eventual abandonment of warehouses and lumberyards, it became a hotspot for punk music and art and would welcome the LGBTQ community, too.

At the nearby Tompkins Square Park, Ginsberg would hang out with other Beat poets and figures such as Bob Dylan, often playing music, having discussions, and reading poetry late into the night. Today, many of these writers are honored by plaques bearing their names outside the church and by trees planted in their honor. Undoubtedly its history and the impact the hotel has had on New York culture.

Home to The Poetry Project, this church has boasted readings from countless illustrious literary figures, from Eileen Myles to John Ashbery. Perhaps its most famous reader was the Beat poet Allen Ginsberg, who was instrumental in its founding it in 1966. Later attendees would include Patti Smith, Robert Mapplethorpe, Andy Warhol, and others. Under the guidance of hospitality impresario Sean MacPherson, the Chelsea has undergone a recent renovation, blending its historic charm with amenities like multiple dining options including the new Café Chelsea and a light-filled spa.

For Thoreau, New York was a toxic environment that embodied all of his frustrations with consumerism and overcrowding – and soon after his first visit to the city, he absconded from civilization and moved to Walden Pond. He was it as a reflection of the perfectly imperfect chaos of the self, a chaos that he fully embraced in his seminal work, Song of Myself. During his residency at Fordham in the mid-1800s, Edgar Allan Poe often took long, contemplative walks, but not across the High Bridge that connects Washington Heights to the Bronx, as it has widely been reported.

She wrote about love, death, depression, and disillusionment, always with New York as her backdrop. When you visit Gotham, you should ride out the Fifth Avenue, as far as the distributing reservoir, near forty-third street, I believe. The prospect from the walk around the reservoir, is particularly beautiful. You can see, from this elevation, the north reservoir at Yorkville; the whole city to the Battery; with a large portion of the harbor, and long reaches of the Hudson and East rivers. Perhaps even a finer view, however, is to be obtained from the summit of the white, light-house-looking shot-tower which stands on the East river, at fifty-fifth street, or thereabouts.

Many of the places di Prima blazed through have since closed, but the apartments she stayed at still stand. She lived in five apartments throughout her time in New York – one at Cooper Square, one at East Houston St., one at East 4th St., one at East 5th St., and one in Hell’s Kitchen. Today, visitors can pay homage to Leonard Cohen, Arthur Miller, and more by observing some of the plaques that bear their names outside of the Chelsea.

Discover the city’s most unique and surprising places and events for the curious mind. The White Horse Tavern can be found at 567 Hudson Street, between West 11th Street and Perry Street. St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery in Greenwich Village was and is a cornerstone of New York City’s poetic landscape.

The completion of the High Line and the addition of Little Island have brought verdant, elevated promenades with great views of the neighborhood—a mix of industrial landmarks and gleaming new structures—which are just a few minutes' walk from the eateries and shops of the beloved Chelsea Market. For more than 130 years, Chelsea has been New York City's arts district attracting culture hounds from all over the globe. It started with the opening of the famous Chelsea Hotel that was meant to bridge class divisions and to "value the arts" and is now home to hundreds of art galleries that showcase the most iconic and innovative works in the world. Untapped New York unearths New York City’s secrets and hidden gems.

While wandering through the artsy streets of Chelsea, you will discover that it’s full of little unique stores. One book store we found is called 192 Books (192 10th Ave) and sells a variety of books ranging from poetry and art to history and fiction. The store has gained enough popularity for many authors to come and have their readings take place here. Chelsea is a very cosmopolitan district with a large gay-friendly community. That’s because you will find a handful of gay bars, restaurants and clubs in the area. People are very open-minded and easy going which leads to a noticeable relaxed atmosphere.

Located in the midst of repurposed warehouses and some of the tallest skyscrapers in New York, you will find Chelsea. Thanks to its art scene, classy night life and great restaurants, Chelsea is one of the most popular neighborhoods in the city. Chelsea has consistently served as the setting for iconic pop culture moments with artists like Andy Warhol and Patti Smith living and working in the neighborhood. Now, Chelsea is home to world-famous retrofit architecture and some of the finest art galleries in the city. Martinson opened the brewery in 2012 in downtown Chelsea’s clocktower complex as the city’s only microbrewery then, and it has since become known for serving craft beers, offering a variety with its pub food, and hosting events.

Yet, despite its transformation into a luxury hotel, it has never lost its sense of community, with long-time residents still calling it home. The Hotel Chelsea, an enduring presence in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood since 1884, has always been more than just a hotel—it's a symbol of New York City's vibrant culture. From its striking Queen Anne Revival and Victorian Gothic architecture to its storied history as a sanctuary for creatives, the Chelsea has stood as a beacon of cool from day one. At night you’ll notice the liveliness and energy of this neighborhood.

If you are done exploring and you think you got a good coverage of all things to do in Chelsea NYC, you can visit other unique neighborhoods such as Midtown, Meatpacking District, Hell’s Kitchen or Flatiron District. In the northeastern part of Chelsea, you’ll find Manhattan Mall (100 W 33rd St). This conventional mall hosts many famous brands like Victoria’s Secret and H&M.

We debunked that myth when we discovered that the walkway was completed after he died. A darker shade of green with the same undertones also works well as an accent. Creams and off-whites lend a warmer, more antique look than a stark, bright white. You can accent a creamy white home exterior with black trim or opt for taupe, greige, and other warm trim colors. We’ve rounded up the top ten house paint colors that never go out of style and specific hues from some of the most popular paint brands. Amazing Gray — a neutral greige with an LRV of 47 — is beloved for its versatility. The color pairings are seemingly endless, and the hue works well on everything from contemporary to traditional homes.

Red + White + Black

If you prefer light and bright modern house colors, Agreeable Gray is the perfect base for your exterior. The greige hue is not quite beige, not quite gray — despite the name — to strike a beautiful middle ground between the two. If you’re looking for a shade that’s not too bright and not too dark, look no further than Dovetail.

How to Choose Exterior House Colors

And since an exterior paint job can last up to 15 years, it's important to get the color right. Trim painted camel emphasizes this home's shape, making it appear wider and taller. The rich camel tone shows up again to bring out the windows and entry door.

Olive Green + White + Red

But if this cool-minded hue tops your preferred color list, consider warming it up. That can be done in several ways, such as a bright accent color like a warmer orange. A contrasting material, such as wood, can also be a good choice, particularly when stained a medium to dark color. In this contemporary scheme, a rich gray provides a good bridge between the two hues. Complement beige trim and natural stonework with warm shades of green.

This will be a year of a new take on neutrals that are deepened by colored tones. There will be an emphasis on colors inspired by our natural surroundings. Yet, in the middle of all these more neutral paint choices, bolder color options that make your home stand out will rise in popularity. If the exterior of your home is looking a little dated, what better way to refresh it than selecting a clean modern paint color? The outside of your home makes an important first impression, so you'll want to think through your decision carefully.

Benjamin Moore

If you’re looking for neon and bold, try Barbie Dreamhouse Purple and Porsche Ruby Star by Backdrop Home for similar tones. This stunning Carmel Valley, California, home features its own oak trees, gardens, and views of the Santa Lucia Mountains. Previously owned by Doris Day, the exterior of this 8.62 acre property has a red-colored gatehouse—with bright white detailing—that is the very definition of charming. Lean in hard to the Barbiecore trend by opting for a bubblegum-pink house that refuses to go unnoticed.

Taupe Gray + White + Teal

This color is just perfectly designed to be paired with bright white accents. Because it is less blue, Hale Navy isn’t overbearing and can be used on gigantic colonial style homes with rows of white windows. This color isn’t meant to just be confined to the indoors, but it can bring a bright modern feel to your home’s exterior! First Light blends perfectly with deep, rich browns or natural wood. Make sure to paint off the natural wood of your home with a high quality painter’s tape specifically designed for exterior surfaces. Below you'll find 30 different paint colors that will liven up any home.

You can add interest to an exterior color scheme without using bright colors. An all-neutral palette looks particularly polished when accented with hits of black. Try painting the shutters and front door black to give your beige exterior a more sophisticated feel.

In 2024, some experts are predicting the return of warmer beiges, yellows, and creams. This is likely a continuation of the trend away from the cool grays that dominated in the early 2010s. However, greiges are well-poised to outlast this fluctuation between warm and cool neutrals because they sit firmly in the middle. Lots of these greiges have green undertones because that’s what gives them just the right mix of warm & cool tones.

Warm colors can evoke warm feelings in people and can give an instant energy surge or rush of adrenaline. Not just a color, you have to pick an exact shade to convey what you want. For example, light colors are more pleasing to the eye compared to darker colors and they also make the rooms feel brighter and larger. On the other hand, darker colors give off a more sophisticated vibe hence making space feels more intimate. Use paint colour to your advantage and don’t just blindly follow the trends.

This off-white hue has subtle gray undertones, adding warmth (without any hints of yellow). You can pair it with almost any other hue to create endless exterior color palettes. As one of Behr's top 10 exterior paint colors, this rich mocha brown is a foolproof choice for your home's facade. It works particularly well on Craftsman-style, Tudor, and Mediterranean-inspired homes. Combine this popular exterior paint color with creamy white or beige for a warm, inviting effect. This classic white tops the list of Benjamin Moore's most popular interior paint colors, and it looks beautiful outdoors, too.

Trending peach and apricot evoke a warm feel and work well in nearly every part of the country. And pair peach with black and white for a classic look, or try greens for an unexpected twist. Ocean blues, greens and aquas are a welcome update to the pale blues of yesterday. Prepare your home’s exterior for painting and try pairing a seaside aqua hue with ivory for refreshing look. And the classic look can be updated with a bold front door and colorful landscaping. This late-19th-century cottage, renovated by designer Ken Fulk (@kenfulk), is a proper tribute to its historical backstory—with a modern twist.

When it comes to pastel shades, white is a successful accent color that adds contrast without being too jarring. When it comes to exterior color schemes, there's something to be said for tried-and-true combinations. This classic home might look out of place with any palette other than warm beige for the siding and bright white around windows and on rails. Look to exterior light fixtures for adding complementary materials or colors. On this exterior, the dark bronze lantern-style sconces balance the home's symmetry, with a pair flanking the doors on all three floors.

For example, try a gray paint on the siding with turquoise accents or a warm green with shutters in a cooler green hue. Blues and grays have been a popular exterior paint color for the last decade. Now designers are combining the two for blue-gray tones that result in a welcoming color choice for home exteriors.

These color in the home color palette is a combination of cool and warm shades. This is one of the color palettes that looks really chic, with the plain white paint colour on the wall. The living room looks very gentle and warm and the colors make it look cozy. The ottoman in blush pink adds a nice refreshing detail to the room.

This 123-year-old Victorian in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights neighborhood didn’t necessarily need a color wash to make a statement. This elegant facade by Cuff Home features a timeless combination of black and white, which never goes out of style. Simple gingerbread trim makes this home by Phoebe Howard a delight. It looks lovely on just about any cladding material, from brick to stucco. If you have to replace your roof, take the opportunity to consider your color choices. Bring home samples and see how they look with your other exterior colors. Instead of using a bold exterior color on your home’s all-over exterior.

Choosing exterior house colors when repainting your home is a big decision that will have daily consequences for years to come. There are three main areas of the home to consider when choosing exterior paint colors. The main color of your home is called the field color, which comprises the exterior walls.

This limestone facade offers a base that's in tune with both the home's architecture and the natural landscape. To keep the color scheme low-key and minimalist, shutters and windows were painted a neutral yellow shade that nearly blends in with the stonework. For a bit of warmth and as an accent, a medium-tone stain warms the front door. Earthy beige coats most of this home's facade, but a fire-engine red front door bucks the trend. If you're looking to quickly switch up your exterior color scheme, a new front door color is one of the easiest makeover ideas. When working with an existing color palette, consider the undertones and color family already used within the facade.

Though white is used as the main hue in the color palette for this room the addition of black, grey, and khaki colors make the room stand out. To create a graceful and elegant color palette like this, you can use the paint color, Pale oak from Benjamin Moore. In this article, we’ll highlight the most popular exterior house colors you can use to boost curb appeal and improve property value. Because of its neutral undertones, Bracken Slate looks especially beautiful when paired with organic elements like stone and wood. Round out the color palette with black finishes — like cable railing, garage doors, and light fixtures — to complete your sleek and stylish exterior.

From light and airy hues to dark and dramatic shades, the right color will transform your exterior almost instantly to help you achieve a more modern look. To make Tricorn Black feel more modern, mix and match organic textures, like wood siding, stone accents, and metal details like cable railing. Consider mixing Blue Note with a charcoal or black shade, like Black Beauty by Benjamin Moore, for an unexpected combination. Wooden and stone siding also add a bit of warmth, completing the striking design. We frequently use Cape May Cobblestone as a field color with a lighter hue on the trim, as demonstrated above.

12 Beautiful Walkway Ideas for Your Home

sidewalk design

Dumpsters, flowerbeds, signposts, benches, lighting, bike racks and so many others help transform a space that, despite being just a pass-through, is also the only public space in most cities. A blueprint for designing 21st century streets, the Guide unveils the toolbox and the tactics cities use to make streets safer, more livable, and more economically vibrant. For cities and towns with historic areas, sidewalk design and replacement must align with the aesthetic context.

Thrifty Designs for a DIY Walkway

Two common types of signs are identification (i.e., bus stop and transit stop sign posts) and wayfinding (i.e., maps and direction) signs. At stations with high passenger volumes, it may be appropriate to provide signs that display real-time information about bus/train arrival times. Transit stop infrastructure is not required for this system, so it is cheaper to implement than the standard system of bus stops used in most urban areas.

Design Controls

Mixture comprised of cement(s), aggregate(s), water, and other chemical admixtures, smoothed and then allowed to harden, forming a solid sidewalk surface. It is recommended that signage be available and accessible to all potential passengers including those with visual impairments (through the use of audio or tactile signage) and those who cannot read English (through the use of pictograms, graphics and text in other languages). Gaps in traffic flow are created for buses re-entering the flow of traffic at signalized intersections. Sight distance is obscured for cross vehicles stopped to the right of the bus.

Indoor Concrete

This increases the visibility of pedestrians to drivers traveling through or turning at the intersection. In contrast, pedestrians crossing an intersection in front of a near-side bus stop are not as visible to drivers approaching the intersection from behind the bus. The sight lines between pedestrians and approaching vehicles are blocked by the stopped bus. There is also increased potential for conflict between pedestrians crossing in front of a bus as pedestrians may not be clearly visible to a bus driver pulling out of the stop. In some areas, pedestrians may need to cross railroad or light rail tracks to access a transit station or stop.

Street Trees

(2) Whether the public entity maintained and operated such an inspection system with due care and did not discover the condition. Also make sure you do not blow the six-month deadline on filing a government claim with the appropriate public entities. If the sidewalk is located in an un-incorporated part of the State, consider naming the County as potentially liable. Recycled pallet wood makes a rustic complement to this short garden walk between drive and yard. Stamped concrete is an option best done by someone with experience in concrete work.

Imagine paths that generate energy as people walk on them, using piezoelectric materials. Smart lighting, which only activates when someone is nearby, could become widespread, saving energy and enhancing safety. Urban sidewalks might increasingly incorporate green spaces, supporting environmental health and offering aesthetic appeal. With the rise of autonomous vehicles, we might see walkways getting wider and roads narrower, prioritizing pedestrian space. Augmented reality could provide interactive experiences, like navigation aids directly on the path surface, making walks more informative and engaging. Reducing Curb Radii Wide curb radii allow motorists to make high-speed turning movements.

Permeable Interlocking Concrete Paver (PICP)

Older sidewalks often aren’t wide enough, requiring a new footprint and potential right-of-way acquisition, or existing utility poles may encroach into the sidewalk space. Depending on the circumstances, overcoming these obstacles requires a balance of innovative design and working with multiple stakeholders to develop a solution. Concrete walkways or sidewalks are more than just a way to get wherever it is you're going—they can provide much-needed curb appeal to homes and buildings, and they are fast becoming a point of artistic expression by way of a multitude of decorative concrete options. The pedestrian clear path defines the primary, dedicated, and accessible pathway that runs parallel to the street.

This option is less desirable for new construction than the techniques described above because it often does not allow for adequate soil volume. However, tree pits are often an existing condition that can be improved with the addition of amended soils. For new construction, tree pits should be as large as possible to provide maximum rooting volume while maintaining appropriate clear width for sidewalks. The sides of the pit below the sidewalk should be open to the surrounding subgrade to allow for root penetration and drainage beyond the pit.

Reducing the curb radii at the corners of an intersection can help reduce the speed of turning vehicles, improve sight distance between pedestrians and motorists, and shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians. It is important to evaluate surrounding land uses and the traffic composition on the roadway (types of vehicles) when considering this treatment. If a curb radius is too small, trucks and buses may have to drive on the curb to turn, which can endanger pedestrians. An engineering study should be conducted to determine the impacts of this treatment on all types of vehicles, including transit, motor vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians.

The general rule is that an adjacent or abutting property owner is liable for injuries caused by a dangerous condition on the public sidewalk, if the dangerous condition was created through the negligence of the homeowner. The primary function of a sidewalk is to provide for pedestrian movement and access to buildings, parks, and other destinations. Sidewalks also function as sites for loading and unloading vehicles, as places for outdoor dining and commerce, and as public meeting and gathering spaces. Sidewalks also serve as opportunities to locate other street improvements, such as stormwater management, plantings, and street furniture. Maintenance All of the elements of bus stop design that have been discussed in this section should have routine maintenance to ensure continued functionality and safety of pedestrians.

Sight distance is defined as "the distance a person can see along an unobstructed line of sight" (University of North Carolina, Highway Safety Research Center, 1996). Adequate sight distances between pedestrians and motorists increase pedestrian safety. Motorists also need appropriate sight distances to see traffic signals in time to stop. Marked crosswalks are most effective when they can be identified easily by motorists.

sidewalk design

The sidewalk should be clear of obstructions, including overhanging branches, utility poles, and signs. Good pedestrian design should account for the needs of all potential users, including those with physical or mental limitations. Sidewalk immediately behind the curb should be considered for installation of a sub-drain system parallel to the curb to facilitate drainage away from the base and reduce frost heave in cold climates. Additionally, providing a subgrade of quick-draining material as noted above will help reduce frost heave in areas with soils that drain poorly.

back of house

The back of house also serves as a place for employees and managers to do administrative work. Office staff for BOH operations will cover everything from accounting staff who keep track of restaurant expenses, to overhead department managers who manage everyone from wait staff to room service workers. The office staff are typically away from the main working floor of the hotel, but they maintain a constant view of the work going on. It requires significant planning, organization, and coordination among various tasks like procurement, food preparation, dishwashing, and inventory management.

Make sure to choose a layout that has good flow and will help you meet your kitchen goals. It's essential to have a well-maintained parking lotthat is easily accessible and provides ample parking space. A clean and well-lit parking lot not only ensures the safety of your customers but also gives a positive impression of your restaurant. Most guests who eat out at restaurants will use the restroom at one point during their visit, especially if they have children, which is why it’s crucial not to overlook this small area.

FOH vs. BOH dynamics in the foodservice industry

High-profile politicians and administration officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., attended as well. Gershkovich’s parents and Tice’s mother were among the approximately 2,600 guests at the dinner, an estimate provided by NBC News political correspondent Steve Kornacki in a video that played at the event. The president said later that age was the only thing he and Trump had in common, adding, “My vice president actually endorses me,” a reference to former Vice President Mike Pence's refusal to say he'll back his former running mate in 2024. How To Manage Multichain Restaurant Business

Roles like servers, hosts, and bartenders operate here, ensuring a positive ambiance, excellent customer service, and smooth guest interactions. Scheduling both your FOH and BOH employees can be challenging when you consider how different their job descriptions are. BOH employees often need to come in to work much earlier to prepare food and plan dishes before the restaurant opens but may leave earlier than FOH staff once the kitchen closes.

Food Runner

Key front of house roles include host/hostess, servers, bartenders, bussers, food runners and sommeliers. A Kitchen Display System (KDS) helps restaurants to manage their kitchens better. Integrated with your restaurant POS, a KDS can provide real-time information about orders, help improve food preparation accuracy and efficiency and enhance communication between the front and back of house. Many restaurant managers put more effort into managing the front of house (FOH) because it’s the public face of the business. The front and back of house have to work together to provide the best customer experience possible.

The back-of-house (BOH) at a restaurant is the behind-the-scenes area of the restaurant — it works like an engine and keeps the restaurant going. It is a busy place with hot surfaces, chaotic movements, staff shouts, and cutlery noise. While it is not visible to the customers, the restaurant’s services get hampered without back-of-house. They plan menus and specials, order food, calculate expenses, and perform administrative tasks. The kitchen manager is in charge of supervising the back of house workers.

There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. Instead, send them all the required reading and documents as soon as they accept their position. You can use a tool like Homebase onboarding to have new employees e-sign their direct deposits, W-4s, W-9s, or 1099 forms, so they’re ahead of the curve and well-prepared for their first day. One of the best things you can do for a painless onboarding process is to avoid the mistake of waiting for a new hire’s first day to have them read employee welcome packets and fill out important documents. Last-minute schedules are, unfortunately, a common facet of working in the restaurant industry, so having a reliable schedule that’s ready in advance will also boost your reputation as a great employer in your community.

back of house

Technology is important in connecting the front and back of the house in the restaurant industry. Many restaurant technologies are available to help streamline communication and keep everyone on the same page. Line cooks are stationed in the kitchen and are classified based on the type of food cooked or position in the kitchen. In addition to the POS, payment hardware and software offer your guests a variety of options to pay for their meals.

Republican House speaker Johnson again threatens universities dealing with pro-Palestinian protests

Speaking of Johnson, all eyes are on Marjorie Taylor Greene, the far-right congresswoman who is attempting to boot him from the speaker’s post for his collaboration with Democrats. She does not seem to have much support, but has reportedly vowed to press on. Texas governor Greg Abbott said no encampments will be allowed after at least five people were arrested by dozens of law enforcement officers, many in riot gear, at a protest at the University of Texas at Austin on Monday afternoon.

The back of the house, also known as the BOH, encompasses all the behind-the-scenes areas that customers will not see. This acts as the central command center in a restaurant because it’s where the food is prepared, cooked, and plated before making its way to the customer’s table. All back-of-house staff should wear clean uniforms and aprons while on the job.

Each part of the machine has very different functions, and that requires different kinds of roles and employees. Despite the differences, when everyone is set up to work well together, the business is set up to run successfully. Dining RooThis is an important touch point in the dining experience because this is where customers will most likely interact with your front of house staff, especially your servers. Front of house (FOH) refers to all of the places in your restaurant that set the tone for the customer's experience. These areas are managed by your restaurant's front-of-house staff, who have the greatest interaction with your customers during their visit.

The simple act of eating a meal together can have profound effects on the relationship between your front-of-house employees and your back-of-house employees. It’s management’s responsibility to bring the FOH and the BOH together to work as one. Because there is minimal customer contact with the BOH, it can be a little less organized than your FOH, but you still want to keep these areas clean and presentable to maintain productivity levels.

Staff who can be proactive in that work, to solve problems before they become problems, will keep the hotel running without hiccups. These roles work together to ensure guests have an excellent dining experience. From the moment they enter the restaurant until they leave, every interaction contributes to their overall impression of the establishment. The front-of-house involves all customer-facing operations, such as welcoming guests, serving, seating, and providing excellent customer service. This area is instrumental in creating the customer’s direct experience, from ambiance to service quality and every detail, from the cleanliness of the cutlery to the server’s knowledge about the menu, matters. Tip sharing boosts teamwork by ensuring that all staff, from servers to kitchen staff, are recognized for their contribution to customer satisfaction.

In setting up a BOH department, you should plan for the positions to hire for, and the traits to look for in candidates. This involves meticulous recording and reviewing of financial transactions, including sales, purchases, and food expenses. It’s crucial for financial management, tax compliance, and decision making. Breakdowns in this partnership can lead to service errors and dissatisfied customers, emphasizing the importance of seamless coordination between these areas in a successful F&B operation.

A key challenge is to ensure the smooth operations between each back-of-house department, from procurement to staffing to managing the inventory and menu performance. The back of house refers to the areas in a restaurant where food preparation, cooking, and storage take place. This includes the kitchen, dishwashing area, storage rooms, and staff facilities.

This year we’re bringing even more interior design insights to Colorfully Behr, with a new series aptly named Designer Features. Partnering with seasoned designers and interior experts, we’ll be bringing you their décor tips, color picks and insider knowledge. For our first feature, we partnered with Mindy Gayer Design Co., a full-service interior design studio and curated showroom in Orange County, California. Known for creating bespoke homes designed for intentional and everyday living, their team was excited to design three unique spaces inspired by our 2022 Color Trends Palette. From the kitchen to the primary and guest bathrooms, each room in Mindy’s renovated home is full of effortless charm and presents the intentional living aesthetic that her design studio is celebrated for. Mindy Gayer Design has undertaken a complete transformation of a cottage-inspired house that is located in Orange County, California over the course of about a year.

A stunning update to a charming cottage-inspired house in Orange County

This full-scale remodel in Orange County, California spanned the course of 3 years from demolition to install. Our clients, a young family of five, were looking for a forever home that could fit their personal lifestyle and aesthetic. The resulting home skews towards a more traditional style, with beautiful millwork and custom cabinetry details in every space. Perhaps our favorite part of this home, the personal details and family heirlooms throughout make the project feel truly unique and tailored from head to toe. These hues also allow for versatility in terms of decor and furniture selections, accommodating the changing needs and tastes of the growing family over time. Incorporating organic textures into the design added warmth and a sense of nature to the space.

Bench seating is one of our favourite features for family kitchens and we love the organic styling of this L-shaped corner seat Mindy has created. A relaxed design element, this style of seating is an intelligent choice for additional storage. The Haven Workshop is for interior designers and home industry creatives who want to take control of their business strategy. Whether you're just starting out or are well-established, this experience will take your business to the next level. The Haven Workshop is an intimate, community-driven learning experience for interior designers who are looking to up-level their business and build a successful brand. I’ve overcome many hurdles and leaned into several growth opportunities over the last 8+ years running my company.

I just can not get into the “Early Man” looks of primitive furniture, pottery and art pieces. All the furniture looks very uncomfortable and for the homeowner who loves pink, I just saw a pillow, 1 poster and some hand towels that has a touch of pink in them. Looks like the home was built by Patterson Homes, the best builder in Southern California imo, so I love the home itself.

The goal of the designer was to create a charming and inspired space that would accommodate their growing family, incorporating updated materials and finishes. The designer incorporated a neutral color palette for most of the finishes and decor while incorporating touches of blush as the main accent color throughout the interior living spaces. The homeowner has an affinity for pink, and the designer wanted to make this home feel timeless and feminine at the same time. As Founder and Principal Designer, Mindy Gayer draws inspiration from the best of California living to create designs that are both beautiful and livable. The magic behind every project lies in the hundreds of thoughtful details that ensure each home truly reflects the client’s lifestyle and aesthetic.

DESIGNER FEATURE: MINDY GAYER DESIGN CO.

The first two people I hired when I was first starting out were very much defining elements in the growth and trajectory of our company becoming what it is today. One of these two ladies is still part of MGD, and she is very much the heart and soul behind many of our best projects and designs. As a small business owner, I take a big leap of faith each time I hire others to join our team. Yes, they are all talented and come with a unique skill set, but it’s still very much an unknown if we’re all honest. For this remodel, the designer wanted to ensure that the homeowner had an abundance of options for both entertaining and relaxing outside of the dwelling. They created both a comfortable and inviting sitting area in the front of the home, a cozy sitting area in the courtyard, and a rooftop deck for entertaining.

Traditional elements were also included, such as classic moldings, trim, and refined architectural details. The design concept aimed to create a cozy cottage home that blended organic textures with traditional elements in a timeless manner. This approach resulted in a cohesive and inviting atmosphere throughout this single-level dwelling. The goal of this project was to create a transitional, timeless, and feminine-inspired home that will be enjoyed for years to come. As a full-service design studio, our Southern California-based team will oversee your project from concept through installation.
